“The rule announced today is
based upon a careful and thoughtful review of
the science. Restoration of cattle and beef
trade with Canada is scientifically justified
and appropriate under international animal
health guidelines.
We are gratified
that the team of peer reviewers who analyzed
the risk assessment done in connection with
this rule found it to be scientifically sound.
This should give American consumers great
confidence in the integrity of federal
oversight of the cattle and beef
supply.
The rule’s further restoration
of cattle and beef trade with Canada and other
minimal risk nations should also prompt all
nations that trade in livestock and meat
products to take immediate actions to come into
compliance with these important global
standards.
