AMI Presents Annual Industry Awards At ExpoWednesday, May 2, 2012

The American Meat Institute today announced the winners of its annual awards. The awards were presented during a special ceremony at the AMI Meat, Poultry & Seafood Convention and Exposition in Dallas, Texas.
Sealed Airís Cryovac Food Packaging was recognized as AMIís Supplier of the Year. The Supplier of the Year Award is given to a supplier member of AMI that truly partners with meat and poultry processors to help achieve industry goals. Under the leadership of President Karl Deily, Cryovac Food Packaging has been a strong supporter of the meat industry for many years. The company has sponsored critical research initiatives and its executives serve as active participants on AMIís Supplier and Executive committees.
Warren Dorsa, Ph.D., vice president of food safety and quality at John Morrell Food Group and Peter Taormina, Ph.D., principal microbiologist at John Morrell Food Group, received the American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF) Scientific Achievement Award.
Topics of their recent research have included: the short-term efficacy of lauric arginate (LAE) as a postlethality treatment against Listeria monocytogenes on hams and frankfurters; the survival and death of Listeria monocytogenes on cooked bacon at three storage temperatures; comparison of sanitizers for reduction of bacterial pathogens on meat cutting knives; and the inhibition of growth of Clostridium perfringens type A in cooked meats during cooling as affected by cooling rate, sodium chloride and sodium nitrite.
Both are active members of AMIís Scientific Affairs Committee as well as the AMI Foundationís Research Advisory Committee and are recognized for their collaborative and constructive approach.
Phil Clemens, CEO of The Clemens Family Corporation, today was honored AMIís Edward C. Jones Community Service Award.
Clemens serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Lancaster Bible College and Board member and Compensation Chair of Delaware Valley Wholesale Floral Group, Sewell, New Jersey. He is a former chairman of AMI. He also serves on the boards of the Ambassador Foundation, Center for Ministry Advancement, Three Springs Ministries and North Penn United Way. Clemens has been an active fundraiser for various community projects including Easter Seals, Indian Valley Library, North Penn YMCA, Philadelphia Food Bank and Penn Foundation.
AMI Executive Vice President James H. Hodges, a 40-year veteran of the meat industry, was honored with the Instituteís highest award, the Industry Advancement Award.
In Hodgesí nearly 30 years with the Institute, he has served in a variety of key positions at AMI, including senior vice president of regulatory affairs. In the mid-1990s, Hodges spearheaded AMIís petition asking USDA to mandate HACCP. Once USDA published a rule requiring HACCP in all plants, he oversaw a nationwide effort to provide regional HACCP briefings to ensure that AMI members were ready to implement it.
His expertise on animal health and animal disease issues is widely recognized. He led the U.S. meat industryís response to the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in 2003. Since that time, he has testified in public meetings and met with foreign governments in an effort to restore U.S. beef exports to 2003 levels.
He is also an expert in processed meat production and safety, and has led the Shelf Stable Meat Processors since 2000.
