House Passes Spending Bill Which Includes Funding for E-Verify Program

The House of
Representatives has passed a large spending
bill that includes $100 million funding for
E-Verify through the end of FY09. The
E-Verify program is used widely by the meat
industry and many other industries to ensure
employee eligibility to work in the
The Continuing Resolution (CR) ─ as the spending bill is called ─ will fund, but not reauthorize, this important immigration enforcement program. The program still needs to be reauthorized by Congress, but that could be postponed until next year.
The CR is now being sent to the Senate where a vote and final passage is expected by Saturday.
